Adopt a Piece of Ozark History:
Current River Segment 1 ![]()
This 2.3 mile segment on the Current River section of the Ozark Trail has it all: beautiful scenery, easy hiking, historic buildings, springs, river access, great camping, and a story that goes back generations. ![]()
🏚️Powder Mill
The section begins at historic Powder Mill, which was once the site of a ferry crossing on the Current River. The Powder Mill Ferry was established in the late 1920s and became an important crossing for people traveling between Ellington and Eminence, sometimes carrying as many as 150 cars a day. The ferry operated until 1977, when the Highway 106 bridge was completed. Even today, remnants of the old ferry cables can still be seen in the area.![]()
🏫 Owls Bend Schoolhouse
About halfway through the hike, you'll pass one of the area's most interesting pieces of history: the Owls Bend Schoolhouse. The National Park Service has described the Owls Bend and Button Rock schools as important rural learning centers for Current River residents. Local community members remember school plays, pie suppers, revivals, and other gatherings taking place in the schoolhouse.
Today, the old school remains standing as a reminder of the communities that once dotted the Current River valley. It is pretty remarkable to walk the Ozark Trail and realize that you are following a route through a landscape where generations of Ozark families lived, worked, went to school, and built their communities.![]()
⛺ Camping
If you want to turn this section into an overnight adventure, there are a ton of camping possibilities. You can stay at Powder Mill Campground, which is operated by the National Park Service and provides developed campsites and vault toilets.
There are also opportunities for dispersed camping in the fields adjacent to the trail, including areas where you can pull in and car camp. If sleeping next to the river is more your style, there are some fantastic dispersed camping opportunities right across from the outlet of Blue Spring. This gravel bar can get busy, particularly during the summer, so if solitude is more your style, hike the OT south to more secluded spots along the bluff line.![]()
💙 Blue Spring
You can reach Blue Spring by driving to the Blue Spring trailhead, or you can hike the 2-mile spur trail from Powder Mill along the north side of the river.
Once you see it, you will understand exactly why it’s so named. The water is unbelievably clear and an almost surreal shade of blue. The spring is approximately 310 feet deep, making it the deepest spring in Missouri. In fact, the National Park Service says that if you could place the Statue of Liberty upright in Blue Spring, only her torch would stick above the surface.![]()
🌲 Adopt a Piece of the Ozark Trail
Adopting a section of the Ozark Trail is a great way to help take care of a place that thousands of people enjoy every year. Trail adopters help keep the trail clear, report problems, monitor conditions, and generally serve as the eyes and ears of the trail.
If the Current River is a place you love, or if you have been looking for a section of the Ozark Trail to call your own, CR1 would be a fine choice.![]()
All adoptions require a minimum of three yearly maintenance outings that consist of basic removal of deadfall, lopping and filing a report of trail conditions. Contact Matt Westby at adopt@ozarktrail.com for more information on adopting this or any one of our available trail segments.
