SUMMARY:NEW DATE - 2020 OT Challenge Hike
DESCRIPTION:The OT Challenge Hike is not just a great time\, it’s our largest fundraiser. After only three years\, the event has generated $75\,000 to help maintain Missouri’s longest trail. \n\n\n\nWhat is it? The Challenge Hike is a fundraiser AND hike. Each registered hiker commits to raising $1\,250 for the Ozark Trail Association and participates in a 17 mile hike. \nWhat if I can’t hike 17 miles? Don’t worry! You can still raise funds for the OTA and be a “virtual” hiker. What a great way to support the organization! \nWhat if I don’t reach my fundraising goal? Don’t worry! It’s easier than you think! There are plenty of current and past participants that are willing to share their techniques and success stories. It is a fundraiser\, so we need you to make a good-faith effort. You can start by reaching out to family and friends and sponsors are the simplest and quickest way to achieve success! \nWhat’s in it for me? The best part of this fundraiser is the group of committed hikers! You’ll be treated to a festive weekend with free camping\, free food\, fellowship\, campfire\, music and all sorts of OTA/Challenge Hike swag. \nWhere is the hike? The hike is scheduled to start at Bass River Resort\, near Steelville\, Missouri. \nHow do I get involved? If you’d like to be a part of this exciting event\, email otchallengehike@staging.ozarktrail.com for more information. \n\n

SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Buffin’ it at Council Bluff Maintenance
DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER \n \nWe will meet at Council Bluff for our first post-Covid-19 maintenance event. We have implemented procedures to be utilized in keeping our volunteers safe and healthy. Please read below the information covering the event at this time\, which may change before May 14th. \nCome one\, come all! Join us as we celebrate Mother’s Day with those women we love by giving back to the Mark Twain National Forest. We’re ready for spring weather and what better way to get into the season than a day in the woods. \nNew Procedures: Volunteers will be required to drive their own vehicles\, have a mask and gloves while following proper social distancing throughout the event. The OTA will ensure that all tools are properly disinfected before and after use. \nCamping: Tentatively we will be basing out of Council Bluff Lake campground. Social distancing will be required with tent set-ups and around the campfire. \nFun on the Trail: We will be doing critical maintenance on portions of the OT that still need some tender love and care to ensure our users have a great experience. We need volunteers to help lop\, weed eat\, sawyers\, sawyer assistants (i.e.\, swampers)\, and a project involving armoring a section of trail by the dam. \nAll levels of skill are needed. Please come\, and keep in mind social distancing will be enforced to keep everyone safe. \nFood: Unfortunately\, we will not be providing food at this time so you will be responsible for any meals during the event. This is to protect everyone’s health. \nSee you on the trail! If you have any questions\, please contact Terry\, thawn@prodigy.net.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Be One of the First! Trail Build at Norfork Lake
DESCRIPTION:Come join the OTA and David’s Trail in opening a new chapter; constructing new trail along Norfork Lake near the Arkansas / Missouri border. This yet to be named future section will form the “keystone” linking the Ozark Highlands Trail in Arkansas and the Ozark Trail in Missouri via David’s Trail. \nWe will be camping at the Corps of Engineers Udall campground and the construction site will be a short walk from the campground with the lake in view from any vantage point. Camping will be available Friday and Saturday nights. There will be toilet facilities but no running water (please bring a personal supply) as we are still officially in the campground’s “off season”. Please let us know in the comments when registering if you have dietary preferences. \nThe OTA will provide a meal Saturday afternoon immediately following the construction. Plan to hang around a bit and share some trail stories. There will be a voluntary “Pot-luck” breakfast Sunday morning. \nFor the build on Saturday\, please bring a sack lunch\, water and something to carry personal items to the trail. You will carry a trail tool in each hand so a small pack is recommended. The OTA will provide all tools that are needed. Please wear sturdy shoes to protect your feet – boots are preferred\, tennis/running shoes are not sturdy enough. Dress in layers to be comfortable as you warm up on the trail and bundle up when the work is done. If you have work gloves\, bring those as well. We will have some to share if you don’t have any. \nTrail building can be like a good day of gardening. It can be strenuous but there are tasks that can be done by folks of all ages and abilities. Everyone works at their own pace under the guidance of trained Crew Leaders and the mantra we live by is “Be Safe\, Have Fun\, Build Trail!” Please feel free to send me a note with any questions! matt.atnip@staging.ozarktrail.com
